Keep Your Face Looking Younger with This Simple Daily Practice

Striving to regain a more youthful complexion? Forget Botox and face lifts. You don’t need a plastic surgeon to keep those dreaded wrinkles at bay. You can keep your face looking its best with just a little daily T.L.C.

Yes, I’m talking about massaging your face. Facial self-massage is an easy, affordable, natural way of encouraging your own youthful glow. How does facial massage keep you looking your best? Let us count the ways…

 IT RELIEVES TENSION AND STRESS.

It’s kind of amazing how much tension we tend to hold in our faces. Think of all the unnecessary facial expressions you make when you’re focusing at work; what about all the unnecessary tension you hold in your neck and eyebrows when you’re reading emails or doing chores. That sort of prolonged tightness can lead to headaches, wrinkles and poor circulation throughout your head, neck and shoulders. A little massage goes a long way to relieving that facial tension and stress.

IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR COMPLEXION.

A dull, lackluster complexion can be the result of poor circulation. When the blood and lymph flow in your face is stagnant, pores can become clogged, cell turnover becomes sluggish and the face can begin to look older than it actually is. A gentle massage can promote rejuvenation, bring fresh blood to tight areas and help your body filter out toxins in the skin more efficiently. The longterm result? A more enlivened, rosy complexion and healthier, more nourished skin.

IT REDUCES PUFFINESS AND INCREASES LYMPH CIRCULATION.

Your lymph system is responsible for ‘taking out the trash,’ so to speak. But the lymph system does not circulate on its own. It relies on movement and the force of gravity to make its rounds. But if you’re not going upside down on a regular basis or practicing facial yoga, lymph can tend to pool and become stagnant around your face and head. Because the lymph is full of toxins that are destined for the liver, stagnant lymph can lead to puffiness and skin congestion. Over time, this can cause the skin to age prematurely and lose its luster. Self-massage helps circulate the neck and facial lymph to encourage cleaner and smoother looking skin.

YOU’LL LOOK MORE YOUTHFUL.

Releasing your facial fascia is hugely underrated. Fascia is a layer of connective tissue directly beneath the skin that holds everything together. You may have had a myofascial release massage, in which a therapist works to release fascial tightness in order to improve circulation and muscular function. Well, your face is covered with fascia, too. Stretching tense areas of fascia can help to improve circulation and encourage mobility, which may help skin appear and feel more youthful, more elastic and less tense.

All it takes is 2-5 minutes a day to reduce stress, improve your complexion and prevent wrinkles. So how can you get started? Here are some facial massage basics to get you going:

  1. Wash your face and apply a facial oil like rosehip, jojoba or coconut (avoid this one if you are prone to clogged pores).
  2. Gently begin stroking with two fingers between your brows up to your forehead. Do 10 slow strokes, steadily moving outward so that you cover the entire forehead.
  3. Gently make 10 outward circles on your temples.
  4. Place two finger on each side of the bridge of your nose. Gently glide outwards, passing over the under-eye area, until you reach the top of your cheekbone just in front of your ear. Do this 10 times, being especially delicate in the eye area.
  5. Make 10 small circles around the top of your cheekbones.
  6. Place two fingers on either side of your chin and glide towards the soft area just below your ear. Perform 10 smooth strokes.
  7. Make 10 easy circles over the lymph nodes in your neck (you know, the ones that swell when you get sick).
  8. Make 10 long strokes from your cheekbone, over the lymph nodes in your neck, down to the crook in the center of your collarbone.
  9. Perform 10 gentle circles at the center of your collarbone.

Viola! Not only will you look better, but you’ll feel revitalized, too! Give it a try.
