Our Other DIY Beard Oil Recipe
In addition to the recipe below, we also have this DIY Beard Oil recipe. Enjoy!
Now the beard looks great, but I can only take so much of the itchy, scratchy beard myself. After a few months I think he was getting tired of it too. That’s when we came up with our favorite conditioning beard oil.
Conditioning Ingredients for a DIY Beard Oil
We had quite a round of trial and error before we settled on the perfect combination of oils and aroma.
Creating a Manly Scent
I know my husband prefers more “manly” smelling products so I included natural scents of fir needle, cedarwood, spearmint, and juniper berry. They give the oil a woodsy, fresh, and invigorating aroma. You’ll note that this recipe includes oils at a >1% dilution. I find that the oils used are quite strong and emit a very overpowering aroma. A little bit of those oils is more than enough. I prefer a low dilution of essential oils in personal care products that I use daily.
Nourishing Carrier Oils for Hair
Next I had to settle on which carrier oils to use. I’ve always been a fan of conditioning my hair with jojoba oil. Jojoba is actually more of a wax than an oil, although it is liquid at room temperature. It is very conditioning for beard hair, but also helps soothe irritated skin under the beard. Plus it soaks in easily and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling behind.
Lastly, I used castor oil. I’ve seen a lot of people tout castor oil as a beard (and hair) growth miracle, but I haven’t heard any proof of that claim. Castor oil is rich in Vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and fatty acids. It also works well to combat fungus and bacteria along with dandruff too! It does have a little bit of a sticky consistency, but I find that it isn’t too bad when combined with the other oils in this recipe.
More surprisingly – I find that this recipe has been working wonderfully as a dual-use product: my husband’s beard and my hair! I’ve been trying to grow my hair longer for quite some time and this oil did wonderful things to not only condition, but also help grow my hair. I definitely see a new luster that didn’t exist before. Needless to say, this conditioning DIY Beard Oil will be a recipe that will be a household staple for us.
DIY Beard Oil: A Conditioning Recipe
- 2 ounces jojoba oil
- 1 ounce pumpkin seed oil
- 1 ounce castor oil
- 8 drops cedarwood essential oil
- 4 drops spearmint essential oil
- 6 drops fir needle essential oil
- 6 drops juniper berry essential oil
- 4-ounce (or larger) glass amber bottle with dropper
- Combine all ingredients in a glass amber bottle (a 4-ounce amber bottle holds this recipe, but just barely!).
- Mix well by stirring with a pipette or capping and shaking. You want to make sure all the essential oils are incorporated fully.
- Store beard oil in a cool, dry, dark location up to the shelf life of the carrier oils.
Apply to the beard with a dropper (4-5 drops are plenty!). You can also put a small amount on your hands and work through the beard. My husband says combing the oils through works well to evenly disperse them.
When using this recipe on my hair, I use it as a leave in conditioner. I comb it through wet hair (or use it in dry hair overnight). It makes my hair smell (and look) heavenly!
