For as long as one can remember, single dupattas have been the ruling fad for traditional brides and women in general. While the accessory is usually worn to complete a heavily-embellished outfit, designers have started experimenting in the recent past – creating plain outfits with worked dupattas, shawls and scarfs.
But, a relatively newer development that has been on the rise is the double dupatta style. And who must the credit go to? None other than designer heavyweight Sabyasachi Mukherjee who, with his creative mind and spectacular craftsmanship, brought back the trend six years ago – and, ofcourse won countless hearts.
Celebrity or not, women are draping double dupattas in the most elegant fashion. And while it may seem like we have entirely borrowed the trend from across the border, our very own couturiers including the likes of Bunto Kazmi and Farah Talib Aziz have mastered the art of two dupattas in complimenting colours.
So ladies who are tying the knot this year or will be bridesmaids at their sister’s or bestie’s wedding, we suggest you try out the double dupatta look. It looks pretty, graceful and elegant to say the least.
From Bollywood to Lollywood, here is our pick of four celebrities who trumped their double dupatta game and completely owned it.
The actor rocked the double dupatta at the Ho Mann Jahaanpromotions and the look is still hooked in our minds. Wearing a white lehenga choli featuring intricate gold and silver work, the starlet was a sure-fire stand-out in Feeha Jamshed’s creation.
We love how the designer dressed Mahira in two contrasting dupattas – a traditional white-on-white embroidered; one draped like a chaadarand another contemporary designed dupatta worked with silver gemstones. A neat bun, red pout and dangly earrings finished off her look. Mahira’s look definitely ticked all the boxes on our fashion list!
Who pulls off regal attire better than Bollywood’s Mastani? The diva walked the ramp for Anju Modi in a crushed peshwaas and banarsi lehenga featuring hues of rust and maroon.
Draping a double dupatta is not as challenging as it seems. Deepika wore a sheer floral one over her head and a relatively heavier one over her arms. Traditional jewellery including a maang teeka, jhoomar and nathmade her look fit for a Mughal princess.
To-be-brides, try this look for one of your wedding functions and you’ll be forever grateful to Ms Padukone!
Known to be daring and unique in her taste, the style icon gave the double dupatta her own twist by wearing it with an ice blue floral sari. Sporting an Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla ensemble, her halter-neck blouse was detailed with mirror-work – a common technique used by the ace designer.
What we truly admired about Sonam’s look was how she compensated for the sexy backless blouse (that showed a lot of skin) by hiding both her arms. One with the sari pallu and the other with a simple dupatta. Not many would be a fan of this look, but we surely are.
The actor wore a two-legged gharara with a knee-length choli. While her look exuded utmost sophistication, we love how the muted gold outfit was worn with two vivid-coloured dupattas – blue and pink.
While one dupatta draped over her shoulder, the other spread over her arm and fell to the floor. Needless to say, her look has left us floored.
